Late last year, scientists spotted a 50-second-long blast of energy coming towards Earth, known as a gamma-ray burst or GRB, which are the most powerful explosions in the universe. Immediately, researchers started looking for the afterglow that such blasts leave behind, with that visible light being useful to find where the blast has come from..." "Earth hit by gamma-ray burst blast of radiation from neutron stars collision that created kilanova" "...Earth hit by strange 'gamma-ray burst' blast of high-energy radiation from the collision of two neutron stars that change scientists’ understanding of how these cosmic explosions happen..." ~ "...But those researchers instead found something else entirely: that the blast appeared to have come from a kilonova. Those rare events only happen when a neutron star merges with another very compact object – either another neutron star or a black hole. The study challenges our understanding of where such long-lasting GRBs come from. But it could also provide an exciting way to answer other questions about the universe, such as where its heaviest elements come from, which still remains a mystery. And the galaxy from which the GRB came from is also strange. It is young and still forming stars – the opposite of the only other known nearby galaxy that has played host to such an event. “This event looks unlike anything else we have seen before from a long gamma-ray burst,” said Jillian Rastinejad, from Northwestern University, who led the study. “Its gamma rays resemble those of bursts produced by the collapse of massive stars. Given that all other confirmed neutron star mergers we have observed have been accompanied by bursts lasting less than two seconds, we had every reason to expect this 50-second GRB was created by the collapse of a massive star. This event represents an exciting paradigm shift for gamma-ray burst astronomy.” A paper describing the findings, ‘A kilonova following a long-duration gamma-ray burst at 350 Mpc’, is published in the journal Nature today. The blast was first spotted in December 2021, by Nasa’s Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory and the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. Since then, researchers have been looking to categorise the explosion, and understand where it might have come from. Among other findings, they showed that the one event produced heavy elements that amounted to roughly 1,000 times the mass of our Earth. That suggests that kilonovae are the main place that gold is produced in the universe. And because the galaxy from which the GRB came from is relatively nearby, scientists were able to get an unusually good look at it. What’s more, that could help explain other gamma-ray bursts that do not seem to fit with our understanding of where they come from. “This was a remarkable GRB,” said Benjamin Gompertz. “We don’t expect mergers to last more than about two seconds. Somehow, this one powered a jet for almost a full minute. It’s possible the behaviour could be explained by a long-lasting neutron star, but we can’t rule out that what we saw was a neutron star being ripped apart by a black hole. “Studying more of these events will help us determine which is the right answer and the detailed information we gained from GRB 211211A will be invaluable for this interpretation.” And scientists hope that the switch-on of the James Webb Space Telescope will get an even better view of kilonovae. That telescope is able to capture images of distant astronomical objects, and “sniff” their atmosphere, allowing it to see exactly what elements are present through a process known as spectroscopy. “Unfortunately, even the best ground-based telescopes are not sensitive enough to perform spectroscopy,” Rastinejad said. “With the JWST, we could have obtained a spectrum of the kilonova. Those spectral lines provide direct evidence that you have detected the heaviest elements.”..." "Powerful Gamma Ray Burst Hit Earth - The Outburst Shocked Astronomers" "...Astronomers have never seen anything quite like it. On Oct. 9, 2022, Earth-orbiting satellites detected the strongest gamma-ray burst (GRB) in modern history: GRB221009A. How strong was it? It caused electrical currents to flow through the surface of our planet. Dr. Andrew Klekociuk in Tasmania recorded the effect using an Earth Probe Antenna. Researchers have known since 1983 that gamma-ray bursts can ionize Earth’s atmosphere and, thus, disturb the great waveguide. This appears to be the first time anyone has recorded the effect using an Earth Probe Antenna. The outburst on Oct. 9th shocked astronomers. “In our research group, we’ve been referring to this burst as the ‘BOAT’, or Brightest Of All Time, because when you look at the thousands of bursts gamma-ray telescopes have been detecting since the 1990s, this one stands apart,” says Jillian Rastinejad, an astronomer at Northwestern University who has been monitoring the burst’s afterglow using the Gemini South Telescope in Chile. Researchers have since pinpointed the burst. It came from a dusty galaxy 2.4 billion light years away, almost certainly triggered by a supernova explosion giving birth to a black hole. This is actually the closest GRB ever recorded, thus accounting for its extreme intensity. spaceweatherarchive.com/2022/... ..." ~ "A Showing of STEVE" "...This short video compiles still images, time-lapses and real-time videos of the Kp5-level aurora of August 7-8, 2022, which included a fine showing of the STEVE arc that often appears equator-ward of a strong display of aurora. STEVE = Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement and is a river a hot gas flowing from east to west, not a normal aurora created by electrons raining down from the magnetosphere. The phenomenon was identified as something unique and worthy of study in 2016, though it has been sighted for decades prior. STEVE appears to the eye as a colourless band but the camera picks up a pink or mauve colour, often with green “fingers” along the edge, the “picket-fence” effect. These do seem to be created by precipitating electrons. This night, after the fingers faded, a green rim did appear along the south edge of the main arc. The real-time video records the flow of the STEVE gas, moving from east to west. The location was southern Alberta, Canada, where we are often well-positioned to sight sub-auroral (i.e. south of the main auroral band) phenomena like STEVE and SAR arcs. TECHNICAL: The sequences of STEVE were taken with three cameras: a Canon R5 with a 15-35mm lens at 20mm on a tracker, a Canon R6 with a TTArtisan 11mm full-frame fish-eye lens, and a Canon Ra with a TTArtisan 7.5mm circular fish-eye lens. Exposures for the time-lapses were 20 to 30 seconds each. The real-time videos were shot with the Canon R6 and a TTArtisan 21mm lens at f/1.5 and with the camera at ISO 51,200 and a dragged 1/8-sec shutter speed and in Canon Log3 mode. www.scientificamerican.com/article/largest-ever-cosmic-explosion-has-raged-for-years/"Largest-Ever Cosmic Explosion Has Raged for Years: ...For at least three years, the mysterious blast has shined 10 times brighter than any supernova- -By Robert Lea, SPACE.com on May 16, 2023" "...Astronomers have witnessed the largest explosion in space. The explosive event labeled AT2021lwx was observed to be ten times brighter than any known supernova, the explosions that occur as massive stars die. And whereas supernova explosions only last a few months, this explosive event has been raging for at least three years. AT2021lwx is also three times brighter than the light that is emitted as stars are ripped apart and devoured by supermassive black holes, occurrences called "tidal disruption events" or "TDEs." The blast is around 8 billion light-years from Earth and thus occurred when the universe was just 6 billion years old... ...AT2021lwx was first spotted by the Zwicky Transient Facility in California in 2020 and was then picked up by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) based in Hawaii. Both of these systems are designed to survey the night sky for astronomical events that rapidly change in brightness over time, also known as "transients." This change in brightness can indicate a supernova or a gamma-ray burst (GRB) deep in the universe or something much closer to home like a comet or an asteroid. Though it was spotted by these facilities three years ago, the sheer scale and power of the explosion AT2021lwx were unknown until now. "We came upon this by chance, as it was flagged by our search algorithm when we were searching for a type of supernova," University of Southampton research fellow Philip Wiseman, who led the research, said in an emailed statement. "Most supernovae and TDEs only last for a couple of months before fading away. For something to be bright for two plus years was immediately very unusual." Wiseman and the team of astronomers think that AT2021lwx may be the result of a black hole violently disrupting a cloud of gas with a mass thousands of times greater than the sun. As it did so, the black hole swallowed fragments of the gas cloud, sending shockwaves into both what remains of the gas and into a wider donut-shaped torus of dust surrounding it, causing them to emit bright electromagnetic radiation. Events like this have been witnessed before, they are rare. What's more, none that have been witnessed previously have been on the scale of AT2021lwx... ...While AT2021lwx isn't actually as bright as the gamma-ray burst GRB 221009A spotted by astronomers in 2022, this event that erupted from 2.4 billion light-years away lasted for just ten hours after detection. Even though that is quite long for a GRB, it means that AT2021lwx has put out far more energy over its entire lifetime than this gamma-ray burst did in its own. MEASURING THE POWER OF A COSMIC EXPLOSION Following its initial discovery, the team of researchers behind this discovery continued to examine AT2021lwx using several different telescopes including the Neil Gehrels Swift Telescope, the New Technology Telescope in Chile, and the Gran Telescopio Canarias in La Palma, Spain. Following these observations, the researchers took the spectrum of light that was emitted from the event and split it down into its constituent wavelengths, measuring how light was emitted and absorbed around the event. This allowed the researchers to calculate the distance to the source of AT2021lwx. newsletter promo Sign up for Scientific American’s free newsletters. Sign Up "Once you know the distance to the object and how bright it appears to us, you can calculate the brightness of the object at its source," team member and University of Southampton professor Sebastian Hönig said in the statement. "Once we'd performed those calculations, we realized this is extremely bright." The only thing in the known universe that is as bright as AT2021lwx are supermassive black holes. When these black holes feed on stellar gases that fall into them at high velocities, they can let off incredibly bright emissions known as quasars... ..."With a quasar, we see the brightness flickering up and down over time," team member and University of Southampton professor Mark Sullivan added. "But looking back over a decade there was no detection of AT2021lwx, then suddenly it appears with the brightness of the brightest things in the universe, which is unprecedented." Though there are other possible explanations for the explosive event, the astronomers currently favor the explanation that sees an extremely large cloud of mostly gaseous hydrogen or dust that was knocked from its orbit around the black hole and sucked into it. This will only be conclusively determined when the team has collected more data about AT2021lwx. The team will now look at the explosion in different wavelengths of light including X-rays. Doing so could reveal the temperature of the event and what processes are driving it. They will also conduct computer simulations to discover if their model of a titanic gas cloud disrupted by a black hole could account for AT2021lwx. "With new facilities, like the Vera Rubin Observatory's Legacy Survey of Space and Time, coming online in the next few years, we are hoping to discover more events like this and learn more about them," Wiseman concluded in the statement. "It could be that these events, although extremely rare, are so energetic that they are key processes to how the centers of galaxies change over time." The team's research is discussed in a paper published in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society...." "...Copyright 2023 Space.com, a Future company. All rights reserved. And it won't vanish quickly — scientists expect it will slowly fade away until it can no longer be seen in visible light. The new supernova first burst into view on May 19 when supernova hunter Koichi Itagaki from Yamagata, Japan spotted a new bright spot in the Pinwheel Galaxy. The supernova was confirmed the following day by the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) in California. Luckily for skywatchers and astrophotographers, astronomers expect the supernova to be visible for some time. "We expect the brightness to sort of hold steady for weeks, if not months," Daniel Perley, an astrophysicist at Liverpool John Moores Observatory, told Space.com. "It's gonna stay bright."..." "A Star Hurtling Towards Our Solar System" "...Astronomers have predicted that a rouge star called Gliese 710 is coming straight towards our Solar System rapidly, and now they have also worked out exactly when it should reach our solar system. Gliese 710 is currently plunging through space at almost 32,000 mph (51,499 km/h) and it is almost 63 light-years away.
Gliese 710 is nearly half the size of our Sun, and is set to reach Earth in 1.28 million years. When it reaches, the star could end up a only 77 light-days away from Earth – one light-day being the equivalent of how far light travels in one day, which is about 16 billion miles (26 billion kilometres), astronomers say.
Gliese 710 has the potential to perturb the Oort cloud in the outer Solar System, exerting enough force to send showers of comets into the inner Solar System for millions of years, triggering visibility of about ten naked-eye comets per year and possibly causing an impact event. According to Filip Berski and Piotr Dybczyński, this event will be "the strongest disrupting encounter in the future and history of the Solar System"..."

Now, we have a new comet that could reach naked-eye visibility over the next few weeks: C/2023 P1 Nishimura. The comet was discovered by Hideo Nishimura while shooting wide-field images from Kakegawa, Japan on the night of August 11th. At the time, the comet displayed a respectable 5’ coma. Score one for the human observers, versus robotic all-sky surveys… Currently at +9th magnitude (with a bullet) in the constellation Gemini, the comet is now well-placed in the predawn sky. With binoculars, I could just make out the smudge of the comet this morning near Delta Geminorum. I was observing from Jimena de la Frontera in southern Spain. The comet was initially listed as simply HN00003 on the IAU’s Minor Planet Center PCCP site, before receiving a formal name. P1 Nishimura is expected to brighten to +3 or +2 magnitude in early September, though it will also be near the Sun at that time. The comet passes 0.85 Astronomical Units (AU) or 127 million kilometers (79 million miles) from the Earth on September 13th, and reaches perihelion 0.22 AU (33 million kilometers or 20.5 million miles) from the Sun interior to the orbit of Mercury on September 18th..."

"India's Moon-landing", "Israel, the guys we all love & trust, were monitoring the landing", -unbelievable, no, for real, UNBELIEVABLE!!! .as our star rotates, every 25 days, traveling around centerpoint this MilkyWay galaxy, it goes through debris-fields strewn out by explosions out in space, all of which is unviewable with our curernt equipment, as we follow within its ion-tail...

The purple-white colors show the intensity of ultraviolet light on Mars' night side before (left) and during (right) the event. (Image credit: NASA/GSFC/Univ. of Colorado) A strong solar storm recently sparked a global aurora on Mars that was more than 25 times brighter than any ever seen before on the Red Planet, researchers say. NASA's Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) orbiter and Curiosity rover both observed effects from the event on Sept. 11, 2017. Curiosity's Radiation Assessment Detector (RAD) instrument measured radiation levels on the Martian surface that were more than double any previously recorded, agency officials said. "This is exactly the type of event both missions were designed to study, and it's the biggest we've seen on the surface so far," RAD principal investigator Don Hassler, of the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colorado, said in a statement. "It will improve our understanding of how such solar events affect the Martian environment, from the top of the atmosphere all the way down to the surface." -explosions out in space are where our weather begins, our star traveling through ejecta, incoming shprapnel, heat, press sure, debris, occassionally, such as this most recent encounter between a couple neutron-stars, enough force for measurable gravitational-waves, reverberating out in succession, off of our star, radiation changing atmospheres, these solarwinds overcharging ionospheres with extreme auroal-displays, each wave arriving as a long, linear, purplish aurora, was caught on daytime side Feb.20, 2018...
