"Gamma rays are a form of energy often associated with the most powerful forces in the universe. Physicists have discovered that gamma rays, invisible and incredibly energetic, are far more common on Earth than previously believed. They occur within thunderstorms, hiding behind the chaos of lightning. This radiation, more powerful than X-rays, has been observed in our atmosphere, and recent findings suggest these bursts of energy are connected to one of the oldest scientific mysteries—the origin of lightning...

"Scientists have struggled for centuries to explain what triggers lightning strikes. The immense electric fields required to create a bolt of lightning have never been consistently observed. It has long been assumed that the electric charge inside storm clouds builds until it is strong enough to overcome the resistance of the air, causing a sudden discharge in the form of lightning. Yet, models and direct measurements have repeatedly failed to explain how such a powerful electric charge can develop in the first place. This is where the newly discovered gamma rays may offer some insight.

The discovery of gamma radiation within thunderstorms is not entirely new. Since the 1980s, researchers have occasionally detected these bursts of energy during powerful storms. These observations have been rare, and the phenomenon was never fully understood. Scientists knew gamma rays were being produced, but the mechanism behind their creation was unclear. These early discoveries raised more questions than answers. How could such high-energy radiation—similar to what’s found near black holes—form within a storm cloud on Earth? What role, if any, do these gamma rays play in the lightning process?

Recent research has begun to address these questions in a significant way. A team of scientists from the University of Bergen in Norway made critical breakthroughs using a highly unconventional method. Rather than relying on ground-based sensors or distant satellite observations, the team took to the skies in a retrofitted spy plane. This Cold War-era aircraft, originally designed for reconnaissance missions, was repurposed by NASA to fly high above thunderstorms, gathering data that would be impossible to collect from the ground. It was an ambitious and dangerous project, involving flights at altitudes just above the tops of massive storm clouds.

In 2023, this plane embarked on ten separate missions over the Caribbean and Central America, flying close to storms in an attempt to capture gamma-ray emissions directly from the clouds. The results of these flights exceeded the scientists’ expectations. Their instruments detected far more gamma-ray activity than anyone had anticipated. Over the course of just ten flights, the team recorded 500 distinct gamma-ray glows. These glows were long-lasting, persisting for several seconds, and covered vast areas within the storm. Alongside these steady emissions, the instruments also picked up 130 shorter, more intense bursts of radiation, known as terrestrial gamma-ray flashes.

Terrestrial gamma-ray flashes, or TGFs, had been detected before, but their frequency during these flights was surprising. The TGFs lasted for only a fraction of a second, but their energy was immense. The high-energy gamma rays created by these flashes are powerful enough to potentially damage aircraft electronics or pose a hazard to astronauts in space, though no immediate risk to those on the ground has been identified. What made these observations even more intriguing was the fact that both the steady glows and the TGFs were detected within the same storms, sometimes just moments apart.

The most unexpected finding, however, was the detection of a new type of gamma-ray radiation. This radiation flickered in a way that had never been observed before, with each burst lasting for up to 250 milliseconds. Unlike the steady glows or the intense but brief TGFs, this new form of gamma-ray emission fluctuated rapidly, pulsing several times in quick succession. The scientists recorded 24 instances of this flickering radiation during their flights, and the patterns suggest it may hold the key to understanding how gamma rays are generated in thunderstorms.

What causes these gamma-ray emissions in the first place? The answer lies in the powerful electric fields that develop inside storm clouds. When an electric field reaches a certain threshold, it can accelerate electrons to nearly the speed of light. These high-energy electrons then collide with air molecules, releasing gamma rays in the process. But where do these electrons come from, and why are they so plentiful in thunderstorms?

A potential explanation for the abundance of high-energy electrons in storms was first proposed by physicist Joseph Dwyer in 2003. Dwyer’s model suggests that when electrons are accelerated by the electric field in a storm cloud, they sometimes produce positrons—the antimatter equivalent of electrons. These positrons travel in the opposite direction of the electrons, creating a cycle that generates even more electrons and positrons. This feedback loop could explain both the sheer number of gamma rays produced and the flickering pattern observed during the University of Bergen team’s flights.

Dwyer’s model seems to align with the data collected during the recent study. The intense electric fields inside the storms appear to act as natural particle accelerators, driving the creation of gamma rays. The newly discovered flickering radiation may represent a stage in the development of this process, as the particle avalanches created by the electrons and positrons grow and collapse within the cloud. These interactions could be responsible for the rapid fluctuations in gamma-ray intensity observed during the flights.

One of the most compelling aspects of this new research is the link between gamma-ray emissions and lightning strikes. The team observed that lightning often followed the appearance of gamma-ray glows and flickers. This suggests that the same electric fields responsible for generating gamma rays may also play a role in initiating lightning. If the electron avalanches inside the storm partially discharge the cloud, this could cause the electric field to build up elsewhere, eventually triggering a lightning strike.

This connection between gamma rays and lightning raises important questions about the role these high-energy phenomena play in storm dynamics. It also suggests that gamma rays could be a key factor in explaining the long-standing mystery of lightning initiation. By studying these emissions more closely, scientists may finally be able to determine what triggers the immense electric fields needed to create a lightning bolt.

The discovery of this new type of flickering gamma-ray radiation is a significant breakthrough, but it also opens the door to a host of new questions. Why do some storms produce more gamma rays than others? What conditions are necessary for these emissions to occur? And how might these high-energy particles affect the atmosphere and the environment? The answers to these questions could have far-reaching implications, not only for our understanding of thunderstorms and lightning but also for fields ranging from atmospheric science to space weather.

One of the more immediate concerns raised by this study is the potential impact of gamma-ray emissions on aviation. While the high-altitude spy plane used in the research was specially equipped to handle the extreme conditions of storm flight, commercial aircraft flying through thunderstorms are not typically designed to withstand gamma radiation. The levels of radiation recorded during the study were not high enough to pose an immediate threat to passengers or crew, but they do raise concerns about the potential for long-term exposure or damage to sensitive electronics.

The discovery of gamma-ray emissions within storms also has implications for space exploration. Astronauts aboard the International Space Station, for example, are already exposed to higher levels of cosmic radiation due to their location outside Earth’s protective atmosphere. The additional gamma rays generated by thunderstorms could further increase their radiation exposure, particularly during powerful storms. This is an area that will require further study, as scientists work to assess the risks posed by these high-energy emissions.

As the research continues, scientists are eager to gather more data on gamma-ray emissions within thunderstorms. The recent findings represent a major leap forward, but much remains to be discovered. Future missions will likely involve more flights, possibly using drones or other unmanned vehicles to reduce the risks involved in flying near active storms. Satellite observations and ground-based sensors will also play a crucial role in expanding our understanding of these mysterious emissions.
