Today we will be discussing the Turgot Map of Paris, France as published in 1739. This map is one of the best interpretations of pre-Revolution France that we have in existence. So much so, that the Turgot Map is said to be photorealistic, and created to scale, at a roughly 1 to 400 ratio.

Besides being enormously detailed, down to the number of trees in each yard, we also have countless details which make Paris stand out from the crowd of the oldest and most intricate Old World cities.

This map is said to contain every detail of Paris at the time it was created; so let us together discuss the map of 1739, and take a walk through every street in Paris.

Please, feel free to use your own viewing of the map while listening to my audio. I’m just here to make you aware that something like this map exists, and did exist, as far back as 1739. The Parisian architecture? Immaculate.

"...Howdy ya’ll.
Did you know for nearly 1000 years a common practice amongst certain groups was to climb to the top of ancient, ruined pillars or columns, and to live atop that standalone pillar for decades at a time, all in hopes of achieving “salvation”?

It sounds like a fabrication, but these were known as Stylites, or Pillar-Saints, and the practice began in 423 AD. Why is this important? While looking through the oldest known photographs of The Temple of Olympian Zeus in Athens (Greece) I came across a bit of an anomaly amongst some of the photographs. In the oldest artistic depictions, and even the first photographs, we can see evidence of a vastly larger structure.

However, in more recent photographs, and nowadays (in 2022) it appears the residue of this additional area of the structure has been removed. So much so, I actually found the same mid 1800’s photograph; one, the original, fully high definition image which shows the additional protuberance - the other: the exact same photograph, scrubbed of the additional structure, with less definition, and this edited photograph was the one released to the public.

Today we will break down exactly what happened, how it relates to ancient Stylites, how they, themselves may relate to the earliest Christian Statues, and how this all has to do with the Temple of Olympian Zeus. "...Welcome back. The Big Apple, Metropolis, The City That Never Sleeps: In my years of research, I’ve steadily been accumulating the rarest photographs of New York City which I could find.

Now, with even more pre-1900 photographs being provided to me by you the viewers, I’d like to share with you today a compilation of the oldest and most unique photographs of New York City from my collection.

I’ve tried to select photographs that I have not seen shared on other videos, hoping to help add my own two cents to the discussion, and give everyone some fuel to their research fire. These are my absolute favorite photographs of New York City; photographs from 1860 through 1960.

I hope with this research we will help inspire new conversations over the grand architecture of our past. There will not be much of a narrative here beyond the 8-minute mark, however this will be a deep, detailed dive through hundreds of images.
