"Comet C/1916 G1 (Wolf) was discovered photographically by Max Wolf at Heidelburg on April 27, 1916. The comet was 5 AU from the sun and 4 AU from earth. The comet was near the orbit of Jupiter. Most comets were found when they passed the orbit of Mars...

As described in Popular Astronomy "It must be a very large comet to have been discovered at such a distance from both the sun and earth, and it should become a naked eye object in a year from now, as it does not reach perihelion until June 17, 1917." The comet failed to live up to that expectation reaching magnitude 10 at perihelion. This was over 50 years prior to Jan H. Oort's theory of a cloud of dynamically new comets which we call the Oort cloud. It would be more modern times before the orbit of this comet would be known well enough to determine that comet C/1916 G1 (Wolf) originated from the Oort cloud. These comets often fail to live up to brightness predictions determined too early. Famous examples include comet C/1973 E1 (Kohoutek) and comet C/2012 S1 (ISON). These comets are discovered when they brighten from sublimation of volatiles such as CO and CO2. Sublimation rates and dust production occur much further out from these volatiles than older comets which brighten from sublimation of H20. New comets from the Oort cloud comets turn on much further out than returning comets.
