"...Clad in scuba gear and edging through narrow tunnels, researchers discovered the stone ruins of eleven sacred temples and what could be the remains of human sacrifices at the site in the Yucatan Peninsula.

Archeologists say Mayans believed the underground complex of water-filled caves leading into dry chambers -- including an underground road stretching some 330 feet -- was the path to a mythical underworld, known as Xibalba.

According to an ancient Mayan scripture, the Popol Vuh, the route was filled with obstacles, including rivers filled with scorpions, blood and pus and houses shrouded in darkness or swarming with shrieking bats, Guillermo de Anda, one of the lead investigators at the site, said on Thursday.

The souls of the dead followed a mythical dog who could see at night, de Anda said.

Excavations over the past five months in the Yucatan caves revealed stone carvings and pottery left for the dead.

“They believed that this place was the entrance to Xibalba. That is why we have found the offerings there,” de Anda said.

The Mayans built soaring pyramids and elaborate palaces in Central America and southern Mexico before mysteriously abandoning their cities around 900 A.D.

They described the torturous journey to Xibalba in the Popul Vuh sacred text, originally written in hieroglyphic script on long scrolls and later transcribed by Spanish conquerors.

“It is very likely this area was protected as a sacred depository for the dead or for the passage of their souls,” said de Anda, whose team has found ceramic offerings along with bones in some temples.

Different Mayan groups who inhabited southern Mexico and northern Guatemala and Belize had their own entrances to the underworld which archeologists have discovered at other sites, almost always in cave systems buried deep in the jungle.

In the Yucatan site they have found one 1,900-year-old ceramic vase, but most of the artifacts date back to between 700 and 850 A.D.

“These sacred tunnels and caves were natural temples and annexes to temples on the surface,” said de Anda.

"...Howdy ya’ll. Today we are going to discuss antiquitech, or old world technology, devices and mechanisms, which either have a purpose which is still being debated today, or appear especially advanced, or rare, for their time period.

In our deepest dive into Old World research we find that throughout time these ancient “ornamental” devices and creations often seemed to be vastly more important than a simple decoration. So in today’s video I’ve decided to discuss a very interesting piece of Old World Artifact, that is, The Dropa Stones of Tibet and China.

Found in 1938, buried deep in a cave system, which runs for miles connecting China and Tibet, a burial chamber was uncovered, complete with seemingly carved walls and hieroglyphs, adult mummies of roughly four feet in height, and most important of all, the Dropa Discs; a series of 716 stone discs, roughly one foot in diameter, said to be complete with nearly microscopic hieroglyphs.

These Dropa Discs, similar to modern day vinyl records, also appeared to be an “ancient record” of sorts, having information contained inside two grooves on each disc.

Eventually the Dropa Discs were deciphered, tested, and subsequently destroyed. What makes this whole story even more baffling is nowadays Chinese Historians will tell us the Dropa Discs never existed at all, and the entire narrative is a hoax, yet we have countless scientific journals which discuss the Dropa Discs after their 1938 discovery.

Are the Dropa Discs an elaborate hoax as we are led to believe today, or are they, in fact an advanced piece of antiquitech that was purposefully hidden from the public’s eye? We will discuss..."

"PopHumanVar: Reconstructing the evolutionary past of the human species

"...A UAB research team has developed PopHumanVar, an application that helps reconstructing the evolutionary past of the human species through the identification of specific genetic mutations that have allowed us to adapt to the environmental and cultural changes we have been subjected to throughout our evolutionary history. This interactive and open resource, the result of a study published in Nucleic Acid Research, is a compilation of functional and evolutionary data of millions of genetic variations present in the human genome.


Throughout our evolutionary history, we have been subjected to persistent adaptive challenges: changes in environmental conditions as we left Africa and expanded to the rest of the planet; changes in diet as we replaced the hunting of wild animals and fruit picking with the domestication of animals and farming; and changes in encountering new pathogens when forming Neolithic settlements. Our adaptive responses to these selective pressures have left their signature in our genomes, something we can now identify and analyze in order to reconstruct our past.

In 2019, the research group Bioinformatics of Genomics Diversity from Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) identified 2859 regions of the human genome that could be relevant to the understanding of human evolution, 873 of which had not been described before. The group, directed by Sònia Casillas and Antonio Barbadilla, researchers at the Department of Genetics and Microbiology and at the Institute for Biotechnology and Biomedicine (IBB), thus provided a very valuable set of data to answer the question "What makes us human?", and made it freely accessible through the PopHumanScan database.

The PopHumanScan catalog was a first step in understanding which signatures had been left by selection on our genomes. Now, the research group has published the new interactive online resource PopHumanVar, which allows narrowing down these signatures, studying their origins and reconstructing the past of the human species. The new database makes it easier to explore and analyze the regions of the genome with evidence of having been the target of natural selection at a given point of our evolutionary history. This will help answering questions such as the functional causes of these mutations, when they occurred, and among which populations.

PopHumanVar collects, integrates and graphically represents functional and evolutionary genomic data from millions of genetic variants based on 2504 complete genomic sequences of 26 human populations from different parts of the world. Thanks to all the information collected, the database allows studying specific genomic regions with the aim of finding the mutations responsible for an adaptive event and discover when and where it first emerged. For example, PopHumanVar identifies the mutations responsible for well-known adaptive processes such as the EDAR gene in East Asian populations, involved in the development of hair follicles, teeth and sweat glands; the ACKR1 gene (DARC) in Africa, which plays a role in the inflammatory response and is associated with malaria resistance; and the one near the LCT gene in European populations, responsible for the digestion of lactose. Moreover, the application allows users to add and analyze their own data so that they can study adaptive processes in populations not included in the application.

The PopHumanVar application, which is the result of a study published by the researchers in the journal Nucleic Acid Research, represents a breakthrough in the study of human adaptation to different environments and big cultural changes during our expansion on Earth, and can be freely and easily accessed at: pophumanvar.uab.cat
