Among climatologists and geologists, Younger Dryas refers to a climate period from 12,800 to 11,600 years ago when the temperature on Earth dropped significantly. The name ‘Younger Dryas’ comes from the Dryas octopetala flower that grows in cold conditions and became common in Europe during this time.

The onset of Younger Dryas was caused by several comets that hit Earth over a 30 year period when a large comet became caught in our orbit.

While the devastation from the impacts was global, the carnage centred on North America where at the time a two mile thick sheet of ice covered half the continent. When a large comet hit the ice shelf, the glacier instantaneously liquified causing a 1,000 foot tall wave of meltwater to tear towards the coastline. Caught in this mega-river that ran through Washington state (USA) were blocks of ice as big as oil tankers.

When the floodwaters reached the coast, sea levels immediately rose causing global flooding. More than 10 million square miles of land—the size of Europe and China put together—was submerged.

While half of Earth battled floods, the other half battled wildfires. Fiery ejectors from the impact started fires on every continent. Almost 10% of Earth’s total biomass was burned in just weeks.

Debris from the impact and ash from the fires blocked out the sun’s light causing temperatures to plummet. Earth fell into a deep freeze that would last more than 1,000 years.

During this period, 75% of North America’s megafauna went extinct, including the woolly mammoth, saber-toothed cat, short-faced bear, giant sloth, giant beaver and dire wolf. There was also a major human population crash. Quarries in North America mined for centuries by the Clovis people were suddenly deserted. Campsites with generations of activity were suddenly abandoned.

The Flores people—pygmies living in Indonesia—disappeared altogether.

A lost civilization buried in the rubble?

This extinction-level event brought human civilization to a halt. But did it also bury the truth about our ancestors?
