These postcards were early photo manipulations of orphans and babies from the 1880s-1910 period. Something is disturbing about these old photos, which only worsened as we realized how many of these postcards there truly were. They have been collected and used as a source of inspiration by artists such as Salvador Dalí, Paul Éluard, André Breton, Hannah Höch, Herbert Bayer, and Man Ray. They show babies being grown in Cabbage Patches, hatching from eggs, cooked in fires, being hooked from the water, left in empty cities, being transported in trains or aerial vehicles, and sold as cattle. Whatever the case, there is something deeply wrong with these photos, and you can feel it. Nemacolin Castle (1789) Brownsville, Pennsylvania" "...Today we will dive into the history of Nemacolin’s Trail, the first documented trail that traversed through the Allegheny Mountains, revealed to European Settlers by Nemacolin in the years 1749 and 1750. Nemacolin was a Chief of the Delaware People. Furthermore, the path through the mountains was eventually used by the British in 1755, who claimed to have rebuilt and reinforced it, leading to the trail being known as Braddock’s Military Road. However, Braddock’s Road steered clear of one location; The Redstone Mound. At one terminus of the once legendary Nemacolin’s Trail was an ancient and sacred mound built by the Mound Builders, eventually housing Fort Burd, and now home to the 1789 Nemacolin Castle, built entirely of Red Sandstone, which was said to be found atop the mound, and was used to construct much of the architecture in the surrounding area. "...Howdy ya’ll. Near Mount Gretna, in the mountainous hills between Lancaster and Lebanon counties, sits a forested area shrouded in mystery. Today, miles into the growth stands an immense watchtower. Indigenous paths, lined with massive boulders set the way for one of the earliest and most important furnaces in American history which began serving president George Washington in the late 1700’s. This area became known as Governor Dick.
The furnaces eventually evolved, as did the surrounding territory. By 1885, we have the United States using the mountain for training, followed by The Coleman Family, who ran the furnaces, opening one of the first amusement parks in the country on the mountainside.
This amusement park included a narrow gauge railway, which is considered by modern historians to be one of the most intriguing in the world. Yet by the end of World War II, most of Mount Gretna was abandoned, the luxury hotels and amusements lost, and a new owner renovated the landscape, including Governor Dick, complete with the robust watchtower. I traveled here to see the sights for myself. Let’s take a look..."
