Today we will discuss the Horse Boat, as well as the ties the Horse Boat has to the Capstan, to future Boats, to the history of Propellers, and we will look at the earliest Horse Boats which appeared in and around Lancaster County Pennsylvania. We will also focus on reviewing the earliest known photographs of these creations. It’s amazing to me how in one small area, we see a cornucopia of rapid evolution in the fields of engineering and construction. We will look at Robert Fulton, Steam Ships, Screw Propellers, The 1730 Wright’s Ferry, Animal Powered Ferries, The 1789 National Capital bid, and the World’s Largest Covered Bridge, Built in 1812, which stretched over one mile long across the width of the Susquehanna River in Lancaster County.
