This is according to researchers from the University of Cincinnati. They have found conclusive evidence of a cosmic airburst at a total of eleven Hopewell archaeological sites in three states stretching across the Ohio River Valley. A comet that exploded above America According to research by experts from UC, the comet that exploded above Northern America caused great destruction in a vast region covering three states in which existed many settlements belonging to the Ohio Hopewell, part of a distinctive Native American culture found throughout much of the eastern United States. The comet’s passage through the atmosphere produced a plethora of debris in our planet’s atmosphere, creating a fiery explosion above where the space rock made its glancing pass. To better understand what was in front of them, UC archaeologists employed radiocarbon and typological dating to define the age of the cataclysmic event. Ad The mid-air burst produced by the disintegrating comet impacted an area larger than New Jersey, setting fires to approximately 15,000 square kilometers sometime between AD 252 and AD 383. Interestingly, according to researchers, the events that destroyed many settlements of the Hopewell coincides with a time when over sixty near-Earth comets were observed and recorded by Chinese astronomers, witnessed by Native Americans, as revealed by verbal histories and folklore. Meteorites and evidence of fires UC archaeologists studied Hopewell sites and found an unusually high concentration and diversity of meteorites compared to other time periods. The meteorite fragments were determined from the telltale concentrations of iridium and platinum they possessed. Experts also discovered a layer of charcoal that suggests the area was exposed to fire and extreme heat in the distant past. “These micrometeorites have a chemical fingerprint. Cosmic events like asteroids and comet airbursts leave behind high quantities of a rare element known as platinum,” revealed UC professor Kenneth Tankersley. “The problem is platinum also occurs in volcanic eruptions. So we also look for another rare element found in nonterrestrial events, such as meteorite impact craters — iridium. And we found a spike in both iridium and platinum.” A Comet Mound Like many other ancient cultures, the Hopewell recorded what they experienced the best way they could. The Hopewell people gathered the meteorite fragments and forged metal from them into flat sheets used in jewelry and musical instruments called panpipes. However, as noted by researchers, beyond the physical evidence, there are cultural clues left in Hopewell’s oral histories. The ancients built a kite-shaped mound near the epicenter of the airburst at a Hopewell site called Milford Earthworks. Various Algonquian and Iroquois tribes, descendants of the Hopewell, spoke of a catastrophe that befell the Earth in ancient times. This catastrophe is believed to have been the explosion of the comet. “The Shawnee refer to a ‘sky panther’ that had the power to tear down forests. The Ottawa talk of a day when the sun fell from the sky. And when a comet hits the thermosphere, it would have exploded like a nuclear bomb,” the researchers explain. The study was published in the journal Nature Scientific Reports. Comet Impacts and the rise and fall of civilization However, even before the Hopewell culture experienced the wrath of the cosmos, tens of thousands of years ancient civilizations survived similar events. Around 13,000 years ago, humankind’s behavior changed. According to researchers, hunter-gatherer societies began changing their lifestyles abruptly. Permanent settlements were built, and cultures began to form, focusing their efforts on farming. Some of the oldest known megalithic structures were built precisely around this period, approximately 13,000 years ago. While such cataclysmic events can bring an end to civilizations, these events can also kick-start the rise of culture. Archeological excavations carried out across the planet have yielded conclusive evidence of drastic changes in the environment. As revealed in previous articles published on Curiomsos, these changes are believed to have occurred around 10 800 BC. Hopewell, who in the 1890s owned land where a massive earthwork complex that included 29 burial mounds had been found outside Chillicothe, Ohio, according to the National Park Service. “The true tribal names of these people were lost over the millennia,” the Park Service says on a webpage about the Hopewell. Tankersley said the Hopewell archaeological sites contained diverse material that probably came from the jumbled makeup of a comet, which is like a big, dirty snowball that picks up debris on its travels. One day during the third or fourth century, based on radiocarbon dating, a chunk of a passing comet was broken off by Earth’s gravitational pull, he said. It plunged into the atmosphere, where its frozen gases exploded and showered debris on the planet’s surface. This tribe helped the Pilgrims survive for their first Thanksgiving. They still regret it 400 years later. The suspected comet could have been any one of 69 believed to have passed close to Earth during that period, including Halley’s comet, which visited in April 295 and in February 374, Tankersley said. He said excavation and research showed that the mysterious comet-like earthwork in Milford, Ohio, was built after the explosion because suspected comet remnants were found below the level of the earthwork. The site is now beneath a local cemetery and has mostly disappeared, Tankersley said. But the earthwork had a flaring tail a half-mile long and a head more than a quarter-mile around, according to a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers map drawn in 1823. It was also illustrated in a book published in 1848 by the Smithsonian Institution called “Ancient Monuments of the Mississippi Valley.” “This is a great example of Native Americans documenting their own history,” Tankersley said — the Hopewell record of the disaster that may have ended its culture..." |

We’ll take a look at a few such legends, including those among the Choctaw and the Comanches of the United States down to the Manta of Peru. Choctaw Horatio Bardwell Cushman wrote in his 1899 book “History of the Choctaw, Chickasaw, and Natchez Indians”: “The tradition of the Choctaws . . . told of a race of giants that once inhabited the now State of Tennessee, and with whom their ancestors fought when they arrived in Mississippi in their migration from the west. … Their tradition states the Nahullo (race of giants) was of wonderful stature.” A Choctaw stick-ball player, depicted by George Catlin in 1834. (Public Domain) Cushman said “Nahullo” came to be used to describe all white people, but it originally referred specifically to a giant white race with whom the Choctaw came into contact when they first crossed the Mississippi River. The Nahullo were said to be cannibals whom the Choctaw killed whenever the opportunity arose. Comanches Chief Rolling Thunder of the Comanches, a tribe from the Great Plains, gave the following account of an ancient race of white giants in 1857: “Innumerable moons ago, a race of white men, 10 feet high, and far more rich and powerful than any white people now living, here inhabited a large range of country, extending from the rising to the setting sun. Their fortifications crowned the summits of the mountains, protecting their populous cities situated in the intervening valleys. “They excelled every other nation which was flourished, either before or since, in all manner of cunning handicraft—were brave and warlike—ruling over the land they had wrested from its ancient possessors with a high and haughty hand. Compared with them the palefaces of the present day were pygmies, in both art and arms. …” The chief explained that when this race forgot justice and mercy and became too proud, the Great Spirit wiped it out and all that was left of their society were the mounds still visible on the tablelands. They were either extinguished or ‘went back to the heavens.'” Manta In 1553, Pedro Cieza de León wrote in “Chronicle of Peru” about legendary giants described to him by the Manta indigenous people: “There are, however, reports concerning giants in Peru, who landed on the coast at the point of Santa Elena. … The natives relate the following tradition, which had been received from their ancestors from very remote times. “There arrived on the coast, in boats made of reeds, as big as large ships, a party of men of such size that, from the knee downwards, their height was as great as the entire height of an ordinary man, though he might be of good stature. Their limbs were all in proportion to the deformed size of their bodies, and it was a monstrous thing to see their heads, with hair reaching to the shoulders. Their eyes were as large as small plates.” León said that the sexual habits of the giants were revolting to the Natives and heaven eventually wiped out the giants because of those habits. Paiutes The Paiutes are said to have an oral tradition that told of red-haired, white, cannibals about 10 feet tall who lived in or near what is now known as Lovelock Cave in Nevada. It is unclear whether this “oral tradition” about the so-called Sitecah giants existed or if it was an exaggeration or distortion of their legends made after the Paiutes were mostly killed or dispersed in 1833 by an expedition by explorer Joseph Walker. Brian Dunning of Skeptoid explored Paiutes legends and found no mention of the Sitecah being giants. It seems there was, however, a people who practiced cannibalism and who lived in Lovelock Cave. Human remains have been found there, and a few of the human bones had the marrow removed, suggesting the marrow was eaten. Cannibalism seems to have been a rare practice among these peoples, however. The remains do have red hair, but this may be because black hair can turn red with time.
